Cultivating Bodily Knowing: An Introduction to the Developmental Somatic Approach
This workshop led by Helena Kallner introduces a phenomenological and developmental approach to integrating body and movement in interpersonal professional practice - such as psychotherapy and coaching. By attending to the movement dynamics that emerge between practitioner and client, participants can uncover key relational and existential themes, gaining deeper insight into the dynamic process.
Participants will:
- Explore how movement shapes experience across the lifespan.
- Learn how to notice and recognise the needs, feelings and desires that are communicated through gestures, posture, vocal tone and other forms of bodily expression. Although present from birth, these interactions often remain elusive and overlooked.
- Understand the theoretical foundations which support developmental somatic work.
The workshop will include guided movement experiments—combined with theoretical frameworks—in which participants will practice bringing these experiences into the foreground, developing their ability to attend to and trust their bodily knowing.
This workshop integrates findings from Helena's PhD thesis, Forming Form: How Movement Shapes Psychotherapists’ Practical Knowledge. Her work explores the often-overlooked wisdom of the lived body in a culture that prioritises abstract, quantifiable knowledge. Drawing on Aristotle’s concept of phronesis—the ability to act wisely and appropriately in specific situations—Helena explores how movement and bodily knowing cultivate practical wisdom in therapeutic practice.
