Birth Order: Exploring the impact of family positions

As psychotherapists or coaches, we pay particular attention to what Gestalt theory refers to as the “field” – which is the ground or context of our clients that includes both historical and current influences.

One important aspect of this context is the order in which we were born and whether or not we had or have siblings. This factor can play a significant role in shaping our experiences, responses, and relationships.  However, it is often overlooked.  Often clients assume that their experiences were inevitably similar to those of their siblings until they explore the sometimes subtle, and sometimes significant, differences.

In this experiential workshop facilitated by Di Hodgson, we will explore:
- The similarities and differences in our experiences, identifying both themes and what is unique to each of us.
- How birth order informs our understanding and assumptions about our own and clients’ experiences and relational expectations.
- The practical implications for developing our practice as psychotherapists and coaches.
